Building a Sustainable Deck for Your Twin Cities Home

For homeowners looking to have a composite deck built, they’ll be hard-pressed to find a better material than TimberTech AZEK® due to its beauty, durability, and longevity.  In the Twin Cities, metal deck framing is gaining popularity.  Its black color gives off a modern and cohesive look compared to green-treated deck frames. In addition, a metal deck frame will last longer than a green-treated deck frame.  While deck frames can be reused between projects, it’s wise to price out having a new frame and substructure installed.

Many times when the old deck is removed, there are complications with how it was flashed and attached to a home.  It’s important for homeowners to understand that there are a variety of deck footings available.  Diamond piers are a popular option. They are diamond shaped blocks of concrete that have tubes going into it.  A jackhammer is used to drive pipes that are four feet long into the ground.  Diamond piers are much more stable than average deck footings.  An option that’s even more stable than diamond piers are helical piers.  Helical piers are a footing built on a drill bit.  An auger is used to spin the footings into the earth.  They work well close to home foundations and in wet soil types.

If a homeowner prefers to build a porch over a deck, it’s important to know that initially four-season porches are more expensive than three-season porches.  However, the cost to convert a three season porch to a four-season porch is greater than if a four-season porch had been built to begin with.

Increase Energy Efficiency & Curb Appeal with New Windows

Window installation is another way to increase your home’s energy efficiency and curb appeal.  It’s important to note that a window’s interior and exterior colors do not need to match.  Custom paint can be available but may not have the same warranties that standard colors have.  Darker colors are becoming more popular and are now being offered by many manufacturers.

Homeowners wanting a woodgrain look without the maintenance will be pleased to know that Infinity® from Marvin offers the Everwood® Engineered Finish.  Although the material looks and stains like wood, it is comprised of Ultrex® fiberglass.  This material is resistant to mold and mildew.  For homeowners wanting to introduce natural light into spaces that would not otherwise receive it, sun tunnels and skylights are an appealing option.

"The new window that was installed in the lower family room is beautiful.  Everything your team did with respect to the install of both windows and patio door has been exemplary.  I could not be happier with the results.  Your team members were respectful, professional, and fun to visit with.  The city inspector has already come and gone and signed off on both permits.  He found everything to be top-notch."

"We have an 80-year-old 2-story colonial. The shaker porch needed some serious help with the railing, floor, and drainage. The result is very nice, providing a good place for morning coffee."
