Planning Your Twin Cities Deck Installation

A common question about pressure treated deck frame joists is if they can rot over time.  The answer to this is yes.  The reason why has to do with the elements that they have been exposed to over time.  This is why it’s often best practice to replace these materials when rebuilding a deck that is over a decade old.  This is particularly true when the new deck uses synthetic deck boards.  To increase the longevity of deck frames, some contractors are starting to use galvanized steel frames.  Fewer posts are required underneath the deck and there can be a greater span in between railings.  This also creates a more beautiful deck.

Although not the most visible part of the deck, the railings deserve careful consideration.  Homeowners with lakefront properties often gravitate towards dark powder coated steel railings.  This is because the eye can easily look past the railing and fixate on the outdoor surroundings because of the narrow, low-profile balusters.  This type of deck railing also works well with a steel deck frame because the colors match.

Maintaining Your Home’s Wood Decking

While wood decks can be beautiful to look at, they do require significant deck maintenance.  Frequent staining can protect a deck from moisture and UV rays.  When left ignored, wood decks can gray in color and experience mold and algae growth.  Premium deck stains can also make it less likely for decks to form cracks.  The ideal temperature to stain a deck is 65°-75°.  Special care should be taken to not stain a deck on an overly humid day.

"When we finally decided on building a covered porch, we were initially going to get a couple of quotes for the job. Lindus was the first contractor we had over to talk about the project and give us a quote. After talking with the representative, we were so impressed with what he had to say and the materials he showed us that they'd be using we decided to go with Lindus. If I had one word to describe our experience with Lindus it would be PROFESSIONALISM from start to finish!!

"We have an 80-year-old 2-story colonial. The shaker porch needed some serious help with the railing, floor, and drainage. The result is very nice, providing a good place for morning coffee."
