Planning a Roofing Project in 2018? Here’s What You Need to Know!

Our team answers homeowner questions every weekend on WCCO 830 AM from 9:00 am-10:00 am.  Have your most pressing home improvement questions answered by calling 651-989-9226 or texting 81807.  Here’s the must-know information our COO, Andy Lindus, shared on 12.16.17.

Although the hail storms of this past summer should seem like a distant memory, the crews at Lindus Construction are still hard at work on storm restoration projects.  At the beginning of this week’s live call-in radio show, our COO, Andy Lindus, shared that an overwhelming amount of insurance adjusters we’ve been working with are part of catastrophic teams.  This means that they travel from other parts of the country to assist with storm claims.  The challenge this presents is that out of area insurance adjusters may be unfamiliar with the local building codes contractors must adhere to in order to pass inspections.  One real-life example cited was an adjuster that misunderstood the minimum amount of ice and water shield required for an asphalt roofing project.  Until this misunderstanding was corrected, the homeowner we were working with was having difficulty being properly compensated for the roofing project they needed to undertake because of hail.

With 2018 on the horizon, we’re excited to be partnering with HOVER, a 3D technology that creates measured, customizable 3D models of any home.  This software will allow our team the ability to quickly submit exact measurements for insurance claims, while allowing homeowners to visualize how their home’s exterior could look like with updated colors and materials.

Savvy homeowners understand that the winter can be a perfect time to hire a contractor and plan home improvement projects.  One such homeowner texted in to the show to get advice for the best approach to tackling a main level 1400 square foot renovation project.  Andy shared that just the day before, our team had met with a couple that had been in the planning stages of their extensive Minnesota remodeling project.  The project began with an initial meeting with one of salespeople.  After understanding the components of the couple’s vision, we brought in our designer to assist with the selection of colors and finishes.  This information allows us to put together complete pricing, which can be used to obtain project financing.  Partnering with Lindus Construction as your general contractor ensures that you’re not burdened with the task of researching and hiring reliable installers, designers, and an architect.kitchen

While the winter is a great time to plan a spring project, there are many home improvement projects that can actually be completed during this time.  A popular myth many homeowners believe is that  windows cannot be installed in the winter.  However, because the window’s rough opening is only exposed for minutes, rather than hours there’s no issue with completing this work in the winter months.

Attic insulation is another project that can be completed all year long.  Contractors actually favor completing this type of work in the winter rather than the summer where an attic temperatures can exceed 100°.

When vetting a contractor for a home improvement project, one of the most important facts a homeowner should find out is the warranty that accompanies the materials and workmanship.  When asked about Lindus Construction’s approach, Andy had this to say, “Any project that Lindus Construction does comes with a lifetime workmanship warranty.  One of my main jobs is dealing with our manufacturers.  Anytime I pick a product my guys are going to be selling in the home, I make sure it comes with the strongest warranty, I can possibly get.  That’s one of the main pieces of criteria I use in picking who is going to manufacture it.  Take GAF Roofing, their warranty is absolutely bulletproof.  They actually put a 50 year warranty on top of ours so you’re covered in both places.  What we want to do with our customers is handle the entire warranty process from start to finish.  We want to register the warranties and know if there’s a warranty claim because it keeps us up-to-date.  We need to know if someone’s product is failing.”

Andy went on to share that he and his brothers make it a point to test out new products by having them installed on their homes with the goal of offering our clients home improvement products that truly will last a lifetime.  That’s why we make it a priority to offer products with iron-clad warranties that cover defects such as fading, cracking, and chipping.  We give special preference to those warranties that cover both the original purchaser and the next person that buys the home.

As 2017 comes to an end, it’s a great time to give thanks for all that we have and reflect on ways that we can better the communities we live and work in.  One cause that we took special interest in was  Grace Place Homeless Shelter.   Run by the Salvation Army, Grace Place offers a temporary home for one to three months for individuals and families in Polk, St. Croix, and Pierce counties that have nowhere else to turn for shelter.  At maximum capacity, Grace Place can house 64 individuals in need.  Max, a volunteer at the shelter, called to thank us for the donation of time and materials to replace the building’s single pane windows with energy-efficient SeasonGuard windows.  He noted how big of difference it’s made and thanked us for our effort to make a meaningful difference in our community.

"Despite circumstances out of his control, the crew supervisor stayed calm and organized and made sure the job was done well and properly. They replaced our roof and it looks terrific. We asked that he come back to check on something and it was done without any problem. The minor issue was taken care of quickly. We paid more than other estimates but Lindus arranged the whole job be done, chimney masonry work and the roof, making it so much more convenient."
