Getting Started on an Insulation, Decking, or Window Project

Our team answers homeowner questions every weekend on WCCO 830 AM from 9:00 am-10:00 am.  Have your most pressing home improvement questions addressed by calling or texting 651-989-9226.  Here’s the must-know information our COO, Andy Lindus, shared on 1.25.20.

The optimum level of insulation in an attic in the Twin Cities is R-50 to R-60.  The pitch of your roof can impact how much insulation a contractor is able to install within your attic.  Low pitched roofs can present a challenge due to lack of space.  Working with a reputable contractor that has a working understanding of insulation, ventilation, and attic air sealing will ensure that your home is absent of ice dams and is as energy efficient as possible.   Diagnostic testing with the use of blower doors, borescopes, smoke sticks, and infrared imaging allow quality insulation contractors to understand areas where your home is leaking energy.

Prior to retaining the services of a contractor, it’s important to make sure that they perform quality work and that they are adequately insured.  Reputable contractors are accustomed to sharing their insurance documentation with potential clients.  Adequate insurance protects the homeowner from having to pay for accidental damages to their home or medical expenses of workers, including subcontractors, injured while working on the project.  They should also be properly licensed with the state they are performing work in.  Research their online reviews and talk to their past customers.

Meet Lindus Construction Customer, Marianne:

Winter is a popular time to begin planning a composite decking project.  Homeowners considering new deck construction should take a serious look at TimberTech AZEK.  Not only is the material aesthetically pleasing, but it wins high marks for its durability.  In the winter months, it is less slippery than Zuri® deck boards.  TimberTech AZEK also has less expansion and contraction than Zuri® decking.

For homeowners looking to introduce more natural light into areas of their home that do not already receive it, a sun tunnel or skylight can be an ideal solution.  Skylights come with many custom options including solar powered and shades.  Homeowners opting for sun tunnels should understand that they do not include shades and that the amount of light they can introduce to a space can be abundant, even at night.  They work especially well in hallways and bathrooms that do not contain an exterior wall.

Another way to introduce more natural light into your home is through custom window installation.  However, installing your own windows can have serious drawbacks.  One of the most frustrating facts about dry rot is that the onset can be difficult to detect. Any missteps can lead to water infiltration which can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a reputable professional to fix.  Without pinpointing the cause and addressing it, dry rot can quickly spread.  Working with a quality window installer also allows you to understand which windows in your home need replacement the most and which could be replaced in a later phase of the project.

Lindus Construction Reviews:

"Pete and I were extremely happy with the work and the quality of the windows. It was also reassuring to hear the building inspector state he would only consider 2 contractors to work on his house, and Lindus was one of them! In fact he has already contracted with you for new siding on his house next summer."

"During the process, they discovered a sag in the overhanging roof over my porch area. I was aware of the sag before, but seeing the exposed structure made it obvious that the problem would only get worse over time. They designed and installed a beam and post structure to properly support the roof and straighten out the sagging area. Once all the work was done, the new beam and posts looked great. I am very happy with the quality of workmanship, and all the people from Lindus that I dealt with were great. I would recommend Lindus to anyone and everyone."

"I can’t rave enough about the customer service! I expressed my curiosity of an estimate.  Dylan made the process very explainable and broke it down to me in levels of importance first and what we need to do in the future.  I am looking forward to doing my home improvement w/ a business that understands my needs and is willing to work with me.  Thanks Lindus Construction!"
