The Problem With Builder Grade Windows
A commonly misunderstood term in the home improvement industry is “builder grade”. Many homeowners wrongfully assume that this designation means a product, such as windows, is exemplary. In actuality, builder grade materials often barely meet code and have short shelf lives with limited warranties. Surprisingly enough, most major window manufacturers offer builder grade lines, making it imperative that you do your due diligence on the windows you’re having installed in your home and fully understand the warranties that accompany them.
American Made and High Quality Roofing Shingles
While windows can be installed year-round, roofing installations often must be paused during the winter months. Noting this roofing manufacturer, GAF, created the Timberline® HDZ™ shingles. Not only are these proprietary shingles eye-catching, but they can be installed at lower temperatures than many other shingles due to proprietary manufacturing techniques and how the product is nailed to a roof. Midwesterners also appreciate that GAF has a manufacturing plant in Minneapolis, MN, lowering transportation costs. Homeowners that have GAF asphalt shingles installed experience the ultimate peace of mind because they are manufactured with a 50-year, non-prorated warranty that covers both labor and materials.
Understanding Your Siding Replacement Options
Homeowners in need of new siding are wise to compare materials to determine which is best for their home. Two popular options are LP® SmartSide® and Quality Edge steel siding. Both manufactured in the Midwest, they complement a wide array of architectural styles. It’s worth noting that not all LP® SmartSide® is created equally. The product that it’s prefinished in is a major determinant in the overall aesthetics. Diamond Kote® utilizes a proprietary paint that’s long-lasting and scratch resistant.
When researching finish warranties for siding, homeowners should be seeking out a minimum of a 35-year warranty. Homeowners installing steel siding should be aware that it can shift throughout the seasons, creating a loud popping noise, particularly if the material has not been installed properly. The seams in LP® SmartSide® can also expand, so it’s imperative that your contractor is compensating for this during installation.
Decking That Withstands the Weather
It goes without saying that homes in the Midwest take a beating as the seasons change. For this reason, it’s important to select a reliable decking material. TimberTech AZEK® wins high marks for durability and aesthetics. An array of railing systems can be used to complete the deck’s look. Popular materials include aluminum, wire, and glass.
