The first question of the show was about the proper way to insulate a story and a half home in order to ward off ice dams. Ice dams are caused by warm moisture exiting the house comes in contact with the roof deck and melts snow on the roof. As the water moves to the colder edge of the roof, it begins to freeze and cause an ice dam. Story and a half homes are particularly vulnerable to ice dams because they lack eaves which can be used to integrate ventilation. The best approach is the creation of a hot roof through the utilization of spray foam insulation. A roof keeps the roof deck cold, curtailing the formation of ice dams.
Hands down, the most popular remodeling projects we’re being asked to take on are in the kitchen and bathroom. Part of the reason for this is that renovating these rooms provides a high return on investment in the event the homeowner ever decides to sell. Other home improvements that provide a significant ROI include those that contribute to a home’s curb appeal, such as a high end front door. Many of the homeowners we work with on renovation projects have been in their homes for several decades and are looking for a fresh approach to tired home features.
