Areas Of Your Home To Inspect Prior To Insulation Installation

When considering new home insulation, it’s wise to partner with a contractor that views your home as an entire unit, rather than just focusing solely on the attic.  It’s a good sign if the insulation contractors are also reviewing your basement and taking the time to understand how the ridge is sealed up in the attic.  They’ll also take the time to look for a vapor barrier and evaluate how much insulation and ventilation your home’s attic has.  Diagnostic tools should be used for home energy audits.  Infrared imaging can be used to help insulation installers understand your home’s building envelope. It’s worth asking for a detailed explanation if a contractor’s only suggestion is to add more insulation to the attic without talking about ventilation and attic air sealing.  This approach can cause more harm than good.  For example, adding a power vent to an area that already has gable and box vents can cause air flow into the attic instead of it being expelled from it.  This can lead to condensation and mold in the attic.  The same can be said for bathroom fans that vent into the attic instead of being directed outdoors.  Surface attic mold can often be treated with a bleach concentrate. However, left unattended, attic mold can wear down the wood in the attic, causing it to rot.

Your Home’s Structure Can Impact Insulation Replacement

In many Twin Cities homes, a portion of the kitchen may be cantilevered out over the home foundation.  Without proper insulation, the home’s pipes in this area can freeze.  The use of fiberglass insulation is not advised unless it is a dense-packed material.  The best fix for cantilevered areas of the home is removing the soffit from the outside and then spray foaming that area.

Components Involved In Skylight Window Replacement

Prior to getting a new skylight window installation in your home, having new skylights installed in your home, it’s important to review the contractor’s credentials and learn about the flashing kits they are utilizing.  These two components play a major part in the lifespan of a skylight window.  Flashing kits should not be reused after a new roof is installed, as this can lead to leaking.

Selecting The Best Material For Your Roof Replacement

If you’re unsure of whether or not your roof needs to be replaced, there are a few telltale signs.  These include cracked shingles, missing granules, and damaged flashing.  Homeowners that have a new GAF asphalt roof replacement installed experience the ultimate peace of mind because they are accompanied with a 50-year, non-prorated warranty that covers both labor and materials.

Making Your Metal Roof Installation Functional With Snow Bars

Homeowners with a metal roof installation often find it advantageous to install snow bars.  They are frequently attached to the rib system.  However, the type of metal roofing and the width of the panels should be considered prior to making a final decision.   In some cases, the snow bars must be attached through the roofing.  These types of systems should be checked annually to make sure that they are remaining sealed up.  The biggest reason homeowners opt to have snow bars installed is that they control the speed at which snow exits a roof.
