Trend Alert…Rustic Design

26 September 2016

If you’ve been a guest at a Millennial wedding over the past couple of years, you’ve likely found yourself deep in a sea of burlap, aged barn boards, and antique lanterns.  That’s why it should come as little surprise that as couples start purchasing homes, many members of this generation are embracing the familiar and incorporating rustic design within their households.  Here are our top tips for working the rustic interior design trend.

What Rustic Design is: This concept emphasizes earthy and unfinished components.  Furnishings are either historical in themselves or a nod to designs of times passed.bathroom

Common Misnomers: Some of us cringe at the thought of rustic design, thinking that only works in historical homes with lots of acreage.  This couldn’t be further from the truth.  Properly executed, rustic design can work anywhere from a spacious country lodge to a metropolitan condominium.  While it can be invigorating to scour antique stores looking for the perfect accessories, there are plenty suitable brand new options as well.

Color Palette: Earth tones rule this design category.  Opt for muted hues of browns, greens, and yellows. White can also play a part in balancing out dark shades of wood.

Bold Accessories: Steer clear of quaint ethereal pieces.  Instead, inject drama into a space with rigid, masculine pieces that will command attention.  Think reclaimed wood with defined edges and distinct markings.  In terms of natural stone, add dimension with those that are locally sourced.  In order to achieve a rustic ambiance, steer clear of stone that has a heavy gloss.

Bringing the Outdoors Indoors: While incorporating elements found in nature is a great start to a rustic space, there’s even more that you can do.  If you’re in a rural setting, the inclusion of sizable windows that frame your view are a natural fit.  The same goes for the addition of a robust fireplace surrounded by natural stone or wood.

Hardware: While a lot of hardware can fall under the rustic umbrella, there are some elements that should be sought out.  They include dark metals, textured surfaces, and those with a distressed finish.

Bring on the Baskets: As a general rule, your home’s clutter can easily be contained with the strategic placement of baskets.  This accessory works well in rustic home design because the main components of baskets, such as reeds and twigs, are elements easily found in nature.  Seek out baskets that have been tea stained because they have a darker, richer finish.
