Joanne’s Deck Installation in Woodbury, MN
Those purchasing new homes are often surprised to learn that many homebuilders do not install decks. Instead, they leave it up to the home purchaser to determine their preferred decking material and floorplan. This was the case for our client, Joanne, who purchased a new home last year. Appreciating our sterling reputation, expert craftsmanship, and attention to detail, she turned to our deck builders for advice on constructing the perfect double decker deck for her Woodbury, MN home. Here are the maintenance-free materials and deck parts we suggested that would provide a modern look.
Deck Installation From The Ground Up
Footings:
For the deck footings, we advised that the best material to use was helical piers. A helical pier is a steel foundation pin that is installed using an auger. This approach is faster and cheaper than hand dug footings.
Frame:
While most decks are built with wooden frames, Joanne was open to the use of Fortress® steel frame once she understood the benefits. First, steel frames required less deck posts to be used which creates a cleaner look. Steel deck frames also offer strength and durability. A downside of using lumber is that contractors must make everything plumb and square. Steel deck framing circumnavigates this issue. In terms of aesthetics, steel deck frames offer a more modern look than green treated lumber. Steel deck frames also offer longevity and attractive warranties.
Railing:
Joanne was set on a deck railing installation that was maintenance-free, sturdy, and classy. Understanding this, we suggested the use of a Fortress® steel railing. The railing comes pre-welded and offers an upscale version of classic wrought iron railings. In addition, it is coated in a propriety powder coating, ensuring that it looks its best for years to come.
Deck Boards:
Wanting the very best deck installation for her new Woodbury, MN home, Joanne opted to use TimberTech® AZEK decking from the vintage collection. The boards are made from capped polymer which is absent of organic sawdust. This is particularly important in the Twin Cities because deck boards with sawdust included have a shorter shelf life because of the rampant temperature and humidity fluctuations Minnesota faces throughout the year. Joanne appreciated that her new deck offered the low-gloss finish and woodgrain that cedar decks offer without the worry or hassle of staining.
