Analyzing Home Insulation Quotes

Prior to committing to a contractor for home insulation and ventilation, it’s wise to get at least three quotes.  This allows you to get a better understanding of the approaches each company proposes.  Here are the aspects you should be comparing to ensure the work that’s completed is something that you’ll appreciate for years to come.

Insulation Material: When considering quotes, it’s important to understand that each type of material is measured by their ability to resist heat flow.  The higher an insulation’s R-value is, the better it is.  In our extreme climate, it is recommended that an attic have a minimum R-value of 50.  In the past fiberglass insulation was widely used.  However, as technology has advanced, cellulose and spray foam have become popular options because of their ability to hold up against moisture and their ability to be evenly distributed.

Attic Air Sealing: Beware of any insulation quote that does not include attic air sealing.  This process involves identifying and addressing areas of the attic that can allow outside air to flow in.  Areas of concern can include can lights, false soffits, and bath fan penetrations.  Diagnostic testing with the assistance of blower doors, smoke sticks, and infrared imaging can help an insulation contractor pinpoint trouble areas.

Full-Service: If your current insulation needs removal prior to new insulation being installed, be sure the quote includes this.  Also included in the quote should be the disposal of old insulation and clean-up after the project has been done.

Reviews from Past Customers: In the realm of home improvement, it’s extremely rare to encounter a contractor that can quickly execute quality work at a bargain price.  In the winter months, it’s extremely uncommon for an insulation contractor to be able to immediately commence work.  Reading online reviews and speaking with past customers can allow you to understand the caliber of work performed by the contractor.  Previous customers can also share if the results of their project led to lower home energy costs.

Insurance Coverage: A way that shady contractors can save on their costs is by failing to carry workers compensation and general liability insurance.  This spells real trouble for homeowners, as they can be the ones footing the bill if a worker becomes injured on the job or damage is done to their home.  Quality contractors can readily provide copies of their policies.

Go Behind the Scenes on a Roof  Insulation & Ventilation Project:

Understands the Home’s Building Envelope: A home’s building envelope is the outlying framework that fends off the effects of Mother Nature. Aspects include roofing, exterior doors, subflooring, and exterior walls.  Reputable insulation contractors understand that insulation must work in tandem with ventilation in order to curtail heat buildup in the attic, which can lead to ice dams, moisture, and mold.

"We are repeat Lindus customers. We've used them for insulation, LeafGuard®, new deck, sun tunnel install and windows. So far they've replaced 7 windows in our home. Our home is only 7 years old, but original windows were not great.  We are amazed at the difference our new windows have made. My office used to get incredibly hot in the afternoon, now it is almost too cool in there! Our only regret is not replacing all of our remaining windows at once (we will be doing the rest of them soon!). We highly recommend Lindus Construction. We are customers for life!"

"Thank you for the quick response to me on my first contact.  I had a good salesman with a good response to all my questions.  He kept me up to date on when work would be started.  All in all, it was a great experience working with you."

"Yesterday, Chris came to my townhouse to inspect my insulation. Chris was professional, courteous, and shared great information with me. A less ethical company could have easily tried to sell me additional insulation. But Chris, who represents Lindus really well, shared with me the status of my insulation and let me know there was no need to add or replace insulation. Please know how much I appreciate his professionalism and honesty. For all future projects i will turn to Lindus. I will tell my friends and family to do the same."
