Jay’s Lindstrom, MN Millboard® Covered Decking Project
When it came time to replace his wood deck, Lindstrom, MN homeowner, Jay, knew that he wanted to make the switch to composite deck installation. In addition, we wanted to create a permanent overhang that would provide shade on hot summer days. Working together with Jay, our team got started on a custom deck design that would allow him to enjoy his picturesque backyard views.

Steel Railing
A Minnesota deck installation is continuously exposed to Mother Nature. This makes it so important to choose a railing system that’s able to hold up in extreme temperatures. For Jay’s project, we suggested the use of a steel railing from Fortress® Building Products. This type of railing has multiple layers of coatings that protect it against corrosion. We suggested the use of a black railing to help frame Jay’s backyard and offer unobstructed views.
Composite Deck Installation
Although there were many types of decks for Jay to choose from, Jay ultimately decided on Millboard® in Antique Oak with Enhanced Grain. This color palette utilizes hues that emulate those found in tropical hardwood. Each board is full of tonal variation to provide an authentic wood appearance. Millboard® stands apart from other materials for several reasons. First, the composite decking is molded from real oak. This gives it an authentic wood-like appearance. In addition, Millboard® is designed not only to be slip-resistant, but to feel cooler underfoot in the summer than other types of decks. Millboard® is made from recycled materials and does not require any painting or staining to keep it looking its best.
Roof Overhang
The inclusion of a roof overhang on his deck ensured that Jay would be able to utilize the space even on the sunniest and rainiest of days. To do this, we extended the home’s roofline and installed shingles to match those already in place. A pine ceiling with a pre-finished clear coat was installed to offer a rustic appearance that complemented the deck boards. For extra sweltering days, a modern three prong black ceiling fan was installed.
