Greg and Sue’s Bloomington Remodeling Project
Greg and Sue had lived in their Hennepin County home for over two decades. Over the years, they’d worked to update their home’s original features and give it a more modern feel. They’d been referred, just like one in three of our clients are, by a past customer who had also entrusted his remodeling project to us.
Accessing the Mix & Old Features within Their Bloomington Home
When we walked through their front door, we were met with a blend of old and new features. The entryway flooring contained a beautiful blend of soft browns that were warm and inviting. Off to the right was a staircase that certainly was a focal point when the home was built. However, the majority of the wood was the dark stain that was en vogue when the home was built. The stairs were carpeted, something that Greg and Sue wished to update.
Upstairs, the home had a spacious dressing room and bathroom connected to the master suite. Like the staircase, the interior design of the rooms simply didn’t match the updated features of the rest of the home. Features such as carpeting, wallpaper, and dark wood were at the top of the couple’s list of necessary updates.

Updating the Staircase & Landing
Greg and Sue craved a modern look that matched the rest of their home’s features and we suggested replacing the round spindles with mission style square ones. The carpeting was removed. New skirts, treads, and risers in lighter and more modern shade were installed. The space at the top of the staircase was previously carpeted. 4″ Select Red Oak was installed to provide continuity and inject a contemporary feel. The dusty rose on the walls of the upper landing was replaced with sparkling white paint.
Creating a Stunning Dressing Room
Due to the room’s close proximity to the master bathroom, carpet was an undesirable feature in this space. For that reason, we extended the 4″ Select Red Oak flooring from the landing into the dressing room. The dark brown trim and closet doors were replaced with a lighter wood to match the flooring. The wallpapered walls were replaced with calming gray paint. Our interior designer helped the couple select a new white vanity that balanced out the black countertop to tie the room together.
Master Bathroom Remodel for the Ages
For a consistent look, a smaller version of the vanity, mirror, and countertop in the dressing room was installed in the master bathroom. The gray paint was also carried over. In place of the tired small white floor tiles, larger gray floor tiles were installed. In-floor heating was also included. A new shower with a semi-frameless door replaced the previous shower door that had a bright brass finish.
