Brand, style, and color are all important factors to consider when selecting the asphalt roof you choose to install on your home. However, many homeowners fail to ask probing questions about the installation techniques a roofer uses.  Components of a roof include venting, underlayment, and shingles just to name a few.

Learn About the Elements of a GAF Roofing System Here:

When hiring a roofing contractor, seek out a professional that’s comfortable installing thicker shingles, as they tend to have the longest lifespan.  That’s one of the reasons North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, GAF, is able to offer a 50-year, non-prorated warranty on both labor and materials.  Ask your contractor where they install ice and water shield on a roof because even though their work may adhere to building codes, best practices from the product manufacturer should also be considered.

Hear From One of the 75,000 Happy Customers We’ve Served Since 1979:

At Lindus Construction, we opt to place ice and water shield along the eaves six feet past the interior wall.  In the valley areas, w install ice and water shield out nine feet.  We follow this up with installing Tiger Paw™ underlayment over the entire roof, including over areas that have already been covered with ice and water shield, then finish the edge in all possible areas.  Then we install one foot of ice and water shield up the entire roof rake, which is the peak area of the house.  This is important especially for west facing peaks because that’s where the majority of the weather comes from, especially wind driven rain.  Without correctly addressing each of these areas, the potential for a roof to reach the manufacturer’s suggested lifespan is highly improbable.  Partnering with a rookie roofing contractor can have devastating consequences as installation mistakes may not be evident until long after they’ve gone out of business.

Frustratingly enough, regardless of your roofer’s skill set, moss and algae growth can commence on a newer roof due to Mother Nature.  Roof cleaning and zinc strip installation at the very ridge of the roof can discourage growth.  However, GAF, North America’s largest manufacturer of asphalt roofing has opted with a more permanent solution.  Timberline Ultra HD® shingles are manufactured with specially formulated capsules incorporated into the roofing material that are guaranteed to ward off algae growth for 25 years.
