Tricks to Accessorizing with Rugs
If you’re looking to inject a room with warmth & personality, a rug can be a great way to do so. However, in order to make this piece of home decor work within a room, a homeowner must be mindful of a few interior design rules so that the rug doesn’t distract, but rather complements a room. Here are some guidelines for purchasing the best rug that works within a particular space.
Size Matters: In terms of a rug’s size, there’s a fine line between what’s acceptable. If you go too small, the entire room will feel cramped. A rug that’s too large can overtake a space. Based on the room you’re placing a rug, additional guidelines can apply. For instance, when incorporating a rug into the bedroom, the bed should be completely on or off it. Ignoring this protocol can result in an arrangement that looks out of place. If it’s a dining room rug you’re shopping for, make sure that it extends far enough for chairs to be pushed out and still sit on the rug. You’ll have more success with synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester which are less prone to snagging and staining.
Color Scheme: The trick to picking the right rug color is to find one that balances the room’s paint color. If the room is already a vibrant shade, a solid colored rug in a neutral color will work the best. In a space with dark paint, elect for a rug in a warm tone; this will lighten it up. A rug in a bright pattern can also achieve this. If your goal is to make a room feel larger than it is, spring for a sizable rug in a light color.
Shape: Four sided rugs are the most common shape and the easiest to work with. That doesn’t mean you should rule out the use of a round rug, which can inject a modern feel into a room, particularly those with minimal furniture. You can also utilize a brightly colored rug in tandem with another piece of furniture in the same bold color. If you’re into layering, place an animal print rug on top of another rug. Animal print rugs can also successfully soften a rigidly shaped room.
Pattern: Don’t allow yourself to become intimated at the thought of including a patterned rug within a room; they are a great way for you to express your personality. While a patterned rug does not work everywhere, the utilization of one can be a great choice in a room where all of the furniture is a solid color. In an oversized room, a large rug can evoke a sense of grandeur. Geometric shapes put out a modern vibe, while floral patterns are more traditional.
