Our team answers homeowner questions every weekend on WCCO 830 AM from 9:00 am-10:00 am.  Have your most pressing home improvement quandaries addressed by calling or texting 651-989-9226.  Here’s the must-know information our COO, Andy Lindus, shared on 4.10.21.

One of the features of steel siding is when it advances in age, the finish on the siding can oxidize. Homeowners not wanting to replace the siding do have the option to repaint it.  However, the loose paint chips must be removed, and sanding must be done.  However, as long as a high quality and primer are used, the siding can receive a facelift.

Another popular siding material is stucco. One of the drawbacks of stucco is that once it starts cracking and pieces begin falling off, repairs aren’t advised because they are only temporary fixes.  At times, cracked stucco siding can be a signal that there is moisture infiltration behind the stucco.  The longer homeowners wait to address these issues, the more expensive they tend to be in the future.  It’s important to know that homeowners have the ability to change from stucco to another material.  To do this, the stucco must be fully removed until the bare wood is visible so that it can be inspected for rot.

When it comes to home window replacement, it can be tempting to install insert windows because their overall cost is cheaper than full frame window replacement.  However, insert windows are much less energy efficient.  For rooms that don’t receive natural light, the installation of a sun tunnel can be a beneficial addition.  Before having one installed in the Twin Cities metro or Western Wisconsin, it’s wise to verify with your contractor that they will be using insulation as part of your project.  That’s because if there’s any heat loss in your home and it comes into contact with the sun tunnel’s metal tube, condensation can occur.

Wood decks offer unmatched beauty. However, routine maintenance is needed in order to keep it looking its best.  Many homeowners opt to switch wood deck railings to metal or glass railings since of how labor-intensive it is to refinish a wood railing.  After a wooden deck has reached the end of its lifespan, many homeowners opt to switch to composite decking because of its longevity, beauty, and durability.  A frequently asked question about deck replacement is whether or not the preexisting joists can be used for the new deck in order to save money.  This is not recommended because composite deck joists have shorter spacing.
