Before committing to a home improvement project, there are several key pieces of information homeowners should research.  There are many online resources, such as homebuilders associations and the Better Business Bureau, that provide information about the reputation of a contractor.

Once you’ve narrowed down your list, ask to speak with past customers and ask them questions about their experience.  Beware of any contractor that has the quick ability to start your project.  Quality contractors can be booked out weeks or even months due to their popularity and how long it currently takes to get high-end materials.

When hiring a roofing contractor, it’s important to understand all of the parts of the roofing system they will be installing.  These components and how they are installed are critical to the lifespan of the roof.  Some roofers use felt underlayment.  While this meets code, there are better options available.  Tiger Paw™ and Deck‑Armor™ are both choices that better stand the test of time.  It’s also a good idea to ask your contractor where the ice and water shield will be going to ensure it’s going around chimney flashing and vents.

In the months, windows with foggy glass panes do not need to be fixed immediately.  However, a reputable contractor should address the issue prior to winter.  Depending on the manufacturer, it may be possible to just have the window sash fixed instead of replacing the whole window.  This is easier than replacing just the glass pack. Windows with fogging in the glass indicate that the window spacer system has failed.  The window no longer has argon or krypton gas within the panes because it has escaped.

Expert Advice from Jesse Trebil

Elevated levels of radon gas and mold within a home can pose a significant health risk.  Access points for mold and radon include open sump baskets and cracks around a home’s foundation.

Homeowners with sump pumps should keep a careful eye on them to make sure they do not become air locked.  When they do, the basket can overflow.  To troubleshoot this issue, a tiny hole must be drilled in the PVC pipe below the check valve.  This prevents future air locking.

Sump pumps should be checked every spring before heavy rainfalls commence.  A cheap sump pump will only last a few years while a quality system can last over a decade.  The lifespan of a sump pump greatly depends on how often it is used.

"We are very happy with the gutter and roofing project at our home. It took only two days for the complete roofing (with lifetime shingles) and underlayment project!  The next day the gutter crew came out and completed our 163 feet of LeafGuard® Gutters.  Everyone was friendly knew their job! They were a well-oiled machine."
