Alan’s Apple Valley, MN Steel Siding Project

Over the years, we had assisted Alan in Apple Valley, MN with an array of projects including: GAF Timberline shingles, insulation, a patio door, LeafGuard® Brand Gutters, and a deck railing. This time when he reached out to us, he recognized that his current siding was nearing the end of its lifespan and wanted our expert advice on installing siding on his home.

When it comes to installing siding, the biggest decision a homeowner has to make is the material. This holds particularly true in Minnesota where the highest and temperatures ever recorded are 174 °F apart. We were able to confidently suggest seamless steel siding on this property for a variety of reasons. Unlike most vinyl options, seamless steel siding holds up well against denting, scratching and repeated exposure to direct sunlight. It’s environmentally friendly because each piece is cut to the precise size needed. Any scraps leftover are recyclable. A unique property of this material is that it reflects, rather than absorbs, radiant heat in the summer. This keeps a home cooler. The lifespan of seamless steel siding is far superior to vinyl products.

siding before

Once Alan had determined that seamless steel siding was his preferred material, it was time to determine a siding color. This decision can be an intimidating one because no other factor has a more significant impact on a home’s curb appeal. Those with the most long-term happiness with their home’s siding color understand that you must take into account the home’s architectural style, neighborhood, and current trends. The home’s previous color was a brown hue with orange undertones, which was much more noticeable than the neighbors’ on each side that had homes in neutral colors. After some reflection, a sage green was chosen as the new siding color. This was an excellent choice for a neighborhood with an abundance of mature tree and a beautiful accompaniment to the rich brown tone of the shingles we had installed a few years earlier.

Although, home energy efficiency is most often discussed during window and insulation projects, siding projects provide an optimum opportunity to examine this issue. On this project, we utilized Insultex™ House Wrap®. What sets this material apart from ordinary house wraps is that it’s the thinnest insulated house wrap with an R-value. This term is used to measure thermal resistance, and is most commonly used when referring to the insulating qualities of your home thus increasing energy efficiency. In addition, Insultex™ House Wrap® wins high marks for its moisture vapor permeability, along with its water and air resistance.
