Here’s the must-know information from Eric Kube shared on our show. Eric is Lindus Construction’s Design/Build Specialist and provides a customized approach to the home renovation projects our company undertakes.
Eric’s position at Lindus Construction entails meeting with homeowners to discuss the best course of action for their home remodeling projects. A big part of his job is explaining the features and benefits of project materials so that homeowners can find the solution they need. During a recent conversation with a client, he mentioned that he and his wife were in the process of having LeafGuard® Brand Gutters installed on their home. Their motivation was opting out of the time needed to complete this tedious chore. The homeowner he was meeting with turned the tables by selling him on the product, raving that they’d had these gutters installed on three different homes they’ve owned and shared that we were one of the first phone calls they made once they’d closed on each home. This story speaks volumes about the reliability of LeafGuard® Brand Gutters and why they’re such a popular feature on Twin Cities homes. Eric closed this portion of the show by saying, “What I love about Lindus is we put products in that are going to last a really long time. As I get older, I realize the value of not doing things multiple times. While it might cost a little more upfront, if you never have to do anything more with it in the future, how much is that saving you?”

When it comes to home remodeling projects, one the biggest areas homeowners rely on Lindus Construction for is an understanding of building codes. Not only do they vary between Minneapolis and St. Paul, also between Wisconsin and Minnesota. Staying on top of these regulations not only keeps us in compliance, but also allows us to take into account additional expenses that may be needed in order to bring a home up to code during a renovation project.
The first listener’s question was Eric’s thoughts on aluminum decking. Eric weighed in by saying that a drawback of the material is that it’s more slippery than composite decking. Aluminum decking is also prone to deep scratches. Positive aspects is how the aluminum decking seals together well and works as a covering for spaces that shouldn’t receive much water.
Lee called in because his two story home hadn’t had his architectural shingles updated since 1993. He noticed that while the shingles near his roof vent seemed to be corroding, but the rest still appeared to be intact. His question was whether or not we suggested repair of the questionable shingles or full roof replacement. While a GAF asphalt roof has a 50-year, non-prorated warranty on both labor and materials, many roofs may need replacement nearing the 25 year mark. Having an experienced roofing contractor evaluate the roof is the best approach for making the correct decision.
Chuck from Inver Grove Heights presented the next question. His home had been impacted by hail and he wanted to understand how late in the year he could replace his roof. Eric informed him that temperature is one of the biggest factors that weighs into when an asphalt roof if it can be replaced. Shingles do not properly adhere to the roof once temperatures dip to low. This makes the new roof highly susceptible to wind damage.
A homeowner considering LP® SmartSide® wanted to know if it would curtail woodpeckers. Eric’s response is that woodpeckers are attracted to wood siding because of the insects that they feed on that make their way into it. During LP® SmartSide®’s SmartGuard® process, it is treated with zinc borate. This element found within nature wards off insects and decay for several decades.
