Always Remove Pre-Existing Shingles Before Installing New Ones

A question that homeowners often ask about roof replacement is whether the old shingles must be removed. For what it costs to remove the old shingles and for how important the underlayment is to the longevity of the roofing, the removal of the old shingles is recommended.  Without removing the preexisting shingles, there is no way to tell if there is water damage or dry rot under the old shingles.

Types Of Roof Shingles

Home roof replacement provides the opportunity to decide which roofing material makes the most sense for your project.  When installing a new roof, many homeowners decide to replace cedar shake with more maintenance-free options, including architectural shingles.  This is because cedar shake shingles require a significant amount of maintenance to keep them looking their best.  However, not all architectural shingles are created equal.  Every manufacturer has a heavier duty line of shingles.  It’s important to compare them to each other to make sure you’re getting a quality investment.  The shingles that Lindus Construction installs are accompanied with a 50-year, non-prorated warranty that covers both labor and materials.

Consider An Ice & Water Shield

When installing a new roof, the weather should be taken into consideration.  If the plywood gets wet, it is possible that the insulation could have gotten wet.  If that’s the case, it needs to be replaced by installing new insulation.  Plywood that gets rained on needs time to try before any new materials are installed on the roof.  When at all possible, a roof should be protected with tarping or underlayment before rain hits.

Learn More About Ice & Water Shield:

While ice and water shield may not be required on all projects, (ex: an unattached, unheated garage) it can still be a wise idea to install it along the sidewall.  If the building is 2×4 construction, there can be heat loss along the sidewall.  This can lead to ice dam formation.  When it comes to the price of ice and water shield, it is wise to make the investment to protect your home, as its cost adds very little to the overall project price.  If the rake, or peak area of the roof is facing the direction that weather comes from, wind-driven rain can cause rot because the plywood was not protected well enough.  An adequate amount of ice and water shield allows heavy rainfall to safely exit the roof without causing rot.

Door & Window Frame Replacement

When it comes to window installation and door replacement, homeowners often want to know if the frame needs to be replaced.  In most cases, it is wise to replace the frame with the door.  That’s because the window or door frame is most often the spot where water or air infiltration is addressed.  This does create a harder installation that includes trim work.  However, the overall result will be better.  There is very little money saved by reusing an old window or door frame.

Material Options For Window & Door Frame Replacement

Two popular entry door materials are wood and fiberglass.  While wood has better curb appeal, it has a lesser R-value.  Fiberglass doors also last longer than wood front doors.  Stainable steel doors are also worth considering.  This is because they can be finished with a woodgrain look.  Steel doors are also heavier than fiberglass doors making them easier to open and close.
